How do you add an effect to a photo online?

Apply an image filter such as grayscale, sepia, duotone, sharpen or blur and adjust its intensity in the preview. Some effects have extra controls, such as an angle or shadow and highlight colors. Use a subtle setting when text and fine detail need to stay legible. For individual brightness, contrast and white-balance adjustments, continue with Color Adjust.

How to add an effect to a photo

  1. Upload one image

Click Upload or drop a file onto the tool. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, ICO, TIFF, TGA, AVIF, HEIC and HEIF files up to 200 MB are accepted. Images you uploaded or created in the other image tools are listed under Files.

  2. Choose an effect

The Effects panel has 25 buttons, from Grayscale and Sepia to Glitch, Oil paint and three kinds of blur. Grayscale is selected when the page opens. For 15 effects the panel notes that the live preview is only an approximation.

  3. Set the strength

Drag Intensity between 1 % and 100 %; it starts at 80 %. Motion blur adds a Motion angle slider, and Duotone adds Shadow and Highlight color pickers.

  4. Apply, compare, download

Click Apply effect. The preview turns into a before/after slider with Original on the left and Effect applied on the right. Click Download to save the file, or Clear result to return to the live preview and try another effect.

Intensity, angle and colors

Intensity
Sets the strength from 1 % to 100 % (default 80 %). For Grayscale and Sepia it is the mix with the original colors: at 80 % a fifth of the color is still there, so use 100 % for true black and white or full sepia. For Negative, Edges, Emboss and Cartoon it blends the effect with the original picture.
Motion angle
Only shown with Motion blur. It runs from 0° to 360° in 15° steps and starts at 0°. At 0° the streaks run horizontally, at 90° vertically and at 45° diagonally. Opposite angles such as 0° and 180° give practically the same result.
Shadow and Highlight
Only shown with Duotone. Dark areas take the Shadow color (default #1b1d3a, a deep navy), bright areas the Highlight color (default #ff6ec7, a pink), and mid-tones are mixed between them by brightness. Intensity blends this two-tone version with the original; 100 % gives a pure duotone.

What Intensity changes in each effect

Every effect is applied to the whole image. Pixel sizes refer to the full-size file, not to the preview.

Grayscale, Sepia and Vintage
Grayscale mixes roughly 30 % red, 60 % green and 10 % blue into each pixel. Sepia uses the classic sepia color matrix. Vintage combines 35 % sepia with 10 % more contrast and 20 % more saturation at full strength.
Warm, Cold, Polaroid and Dramatic
Color grades whose adjustments all scale with Intensity. At 100 %, Warm adds 25 % sepia and 30 % saturation, Cold rotates all hues by 18°, Polaroid brightens slightly and adds 20 % sepia, and Dramatic raises contrast by 40 % and darkens slightly. For exact brightness, contrast or white-balance values, use Color Adjust instead.
Glow
Blends a blurred copy (2–10 px) over the image. The photo gets brighter and hazier as Intensity rises, but unlike a blur, the detail underneath stays sharp.
Neon and Vignette
Neon adds glowing colored outlines over the photo. Vignette darkens the corners to draw attention toward the center. Higher Intensity strengthens the glow or the corner shading; neither effect provides a separate color picker or position control.
Posterize
Reduces each color channel to fewer tones: 12 levels at 1 %, 7 at 50 %, 4 at the default 80 % and 2 at 100 %, which leaves only 8 flat colors.
Glitch and Scanlines
Glitch shifts the red and blue channels sideways in opposite directions by 1–9 px (7 px at 80 %) and boosts saturation. Scanlines draws 1 px horizontal lines every 3 px up to 50 % and every 2 px above; higher Intensity makes the lines more opaque.
Sharpen
An unsharp mask on brightness only, with an amount from 0.5 to 2.0 over a 5 × 5 px area. Stay low for faces and skin; values near 100 % produce visible halos along edges.
Noise, Film and Oil paint
Noise adds random grain with a strength from 4 to 30. Film adds similar grain plus a vintage tone curve that tints the image purple-magenta. Oil paint smooths surfaces while keeping edges, then re-sharpens lightly.
Gaussian, Motion and Radial blur
Gaussian blur uses a standard deviation from about 0.6 to 8.5 px, Motion blur uses a directional-blur radius of up to 40 px, and Radial blur spins the image around its center by up to 25°.
Negative, Edges, Emboss and Cartoon
At 100 %, Negative inverts every color completely, Edges returns white outlines on black as a grayscale image, Emboss turns the picture into a gray relief, and Cartoon darkens the picture and keeps colored outlines. Lower values blend the effect with the original.

How the live preview relates to the result

Your browser draws the live preview with CSS filters on a scaled-down copy, while the file is rendered on the server with FFmpeg, ImageMagick or PHP's GD library. Grayscale, Sepia, Warm and Cold match closely. Effects with the approximation note, such as Neon, Vignette, Emboss, Film and Duotone, give a close impression, and the before/after slider shows the exact result.

Blur, grain, glitch offsets and scanlines are measured in pixels of the full image. The preview scales them to its display size, so a blur you see on a photo shown at 800 px wide has the same relative strength in the 4000 px download.

Because these effects are measured in pixels, their visible strength depends on the image size. If you plan to publish the photo smaller, scale it down in Resize Image first, then add the effect.

Format, quality, transparency and metadata

The result keeps the source format: a JPG stays a JPG and a PNG stays a PNG. HEIC and HEIF photos are saved as PNG, because the server can read these formats but not write them; the tool shows a note when this happens.

Compressed formats are encoded again. JPG files are saved at a fixed quality that you cannot change, and still WebP and AVIF images are re-encoded at quality 92, WebP in lossy mode. GIFs and animated WebP files keep all their frames but are limited to 256 colors, which can add banding or dither noise.

Transparency in PNG, WebP and AVIF files is kept: the effect changes the visible pixels, and transparent areas stay transparent, which makes the tool suitable for logos and cut-outs.

The new file is written without EXIF metadata such as camera model, capture date and GPS location.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my photo not completely black and white?

Intensity starts at 80 %, and for Grayscale that means 20 % of the original color stays in the image. Drag the slider to 100 % for a true black-and-white result. Sepia works the same way.

Why does the downloaded image look different from the live preview?

The preview is drawn by your browser on a scaled-down copy, while the file is rendered on the server. Effects marked with the approximation note are shown as a close impression in the preview. After Apply effect, the before/after slider shows the exact result, so you can compare it before downloading.

Can I combine several effects or add text afterwards?

Each run applies one effect. Open Files, select the result and apply a second effect to it. The result is also available in the other image tools, for example to add a caption with Add Text to Image.

Why is the file larger after adding an effect?

Noise and Film add random grain, which compresses poorly, so the file can grow a lot, especially as PNG. PNG results can also come out larger than a PNG that was optimized before upload. Run the result through Compress Image if size matters.

Is my photo sent to an AI service?

No. The effects are rendered on our servers with FFmpeg, ImageMagick and GD; no external AI service receives the image. Uploads and results are deleted automatically after 48 hours for guests and after 30 days for free accounts.
